Was ist das Modalverben?
Modalverben (modal verbs) wie can, must, should verändern die Bedeutung eines Verbs — sie drücken Fähigkeit, Erlaubnis, Pflicht oder Rat aus. Nach ihnen steht immer der Infinitiv ohne to.
Die wichtigsten Regeln
- Nach einem Modalverb steht der Infinitiv ohne to — „She can swim.“
- Modalverben bekommen kein -s in der 3. Person — „He can“, nicht „He cans“.
- can = Fähigkeit/Erlaubnis; must = Pflicht; should = Rat; may / might = Möglichkeit.
- Ersatzformen: be able to (für can), have to (für must) — für Zeiten ohne eigene Modalform.
Beispiele
- You must wear a helmet.
- She can speak three languages.
- You should see a doctor.
