A Day at a British School

Emily is twelve years old and she goes to a secondary school in Manchester, England. Every morning, she wakes up at seven o'clock and puts on her school uniform — a white shirt, a dark blue blazer, grey trousers and a striped tie. In Germany, most students don't have to wear a uniform, but in England it is very common.

Emily's dad drives her to school. Lessons start at half past eight. In the morning, she has four lessons. Each lesson is about fifty minutes long. Her favourite subject is Science because they do lots of experiments. She also likes Art, but she finds Maths quite difficult.

At half past ten, there is a short break. Emily and her friends go to the playground and chat. At half past twelve, it is lunchtime. Emily usually eats in the school canteen. Today she has fish and chips with peas — a very British meal!

After lunch, Emily has two more lessons. School finishes at three o'clock. That is much earlier than in many German schools! After school, Emily stays for football club. Many British schools have after-school clubs for sport, music, drama or art.

Emily gets home at half past four. She does her homework, has dinner with her family and reads a book before bed. She goes to bed at nine o'clock because she has to get up early again tomorrow!
