The Amazon Rainforest is located in South America, stretching across nine countries including Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. It covers an area of around 5.5 million square kilometres, making it the largest rainforest on Earth.
Scientists estimate that the Amazon is home to roughly 10% of all known species on the planet, including thousands of plants, birds, insects, and mammals that cannot be found anywhere else.
Each year, around 10 million tourists visit the region to explore its rivers, wildlife, and indigenous communities. However, the rainforest faces a serious threat from deforestation. Over the last 50 years, approximately 17% of the Amazon has been destroyed, mainly due to logging, farming, and mining. Conservationists are working to protect what remains.
