Exercise A

Watch the film and take notes

Your teacher shows the film in class. Keep this page open and write your notes while you watch.

Before you watch — optional, not marked
This is just to get you thinking — you can leave it empty and it does not count towards your score.
Background to the film

The film is a historical re-enactment. In January 1788 the first British ships sail into Sydney Cove. Captain Arthur Phillip sets up a British penal colony there, which later grows into the city of Sydney.

King George III has told Phillip to build friendly relationships with the Aboriginal people who live there. But they would rather keep away from the newcomers. In the end, Phillip has one of them kidnapped: a man called Woollarawarre Bennelong.

Task a

Take notes about what happens after Bennelong has been kidnapped by the British soldiers. Sort your notes under the three headings.

Short phrases are fine. Write one point per line.
Exercise B

“Both men were terribly wrong.”

The narrator says this about the future relationship between Aboriginal and white people.

Task b
Use your notes from Exercise A, especially “Hopes for the future”. Aim for about 80–120 words.
Exercise C

Can you trust a re-enactment?

The film shows real events from 1788 with actors, costumes and a narrator.

Task c
Weigh up the pros and cons, then give your opinion with at least two reasons and one example from the film. Aim for about 120–150 words.
